Challenge the CNA Exam in Florida

Florida allows eligible candidates to become certified without first completing a 120-hour CNA training program.

No 120-Hour Course Required

Eligible candidates may challenge the CNA exam without completing an approved training program first.

Written + Clinical Skills Exam

Challengers must pass both portions of the CNA competency examination

3 Exam Attempts

After three failed attempts, an approved 120-hour training program is required before testing again.

What Does “Challenge the CNA Exam” Mean?

In Florida, eligible candidates can become certified as a CNA without first completing a 120-hour Nursing Assistant training program. This option is commonly referred to as challenging the CNA exam.

Candidates who choose this route must prepare independently or through an exam-preparation class and successfully pass the required portions of the Florida CNA certification exam.

For most challenge candidates, this means passing both the written exam and the clinical skills exam.

Challenging the exam may be a good option for someone who already has healthcare or caregiving experience, feels comfortable learning independently, or wants a faster path to CNA certification.

However, because candidates do not receive the extensive classroom instruction, skills practice, and clinical experience included in a full 120-hour training program, it is important to be well prepared before testing.

Basic Requirements

  • Meet Florida’s age/education eligibility requirements.
Have a high school diploma or equivalent, or be at least 18 years old.
  • Complete the required Level II background screening using ORI EDOH0380Z
  • Apply and register through Prometric
